Brief Facts of the Case

The Kanjhawala hit-and-run case is one of the most significant criminal investigations in recent Indian legal history. The incident occurred on 1 January 2023 in the Sultanpuri Kanjhawala jurisdiction of Delhi and involved the tragic death of a young woman after she was dragged for several kilometres by a vehicle. The investigation required meticulous examination of forensic evidence, CCTV footage, digital records, witness statements, and medico-legal findings, ultimately leading to the filing of an extensive chargesheet and prosecution under Sections 302, 201, and 120B IPC.

Our Approach & Strategy

Dr. Tabish Sarosh, Founder of Tabish Sarosh & Associates (TSA), was associated with the matter through his role as a Legal Consultant to the Delhi Police for the Sultanpuri Division — the jurisdiction where the investigation originated. Drawing upon his expertise in criminal law and forensic science, Dr. Sarosh assisted the investigating authorities in the legal and forensic evaluation of complex evidentiary material, including scientific reports and investigative findings. His role contributed to ensuring that the investigation remained legally robust and evidence-driven, reflecting the importance of interdisciplinary expertise in complex criminal prosecutions.

Outcome

In addition to the criminal proceedings, the victim's family received financial assistance and compensation from the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. An ex-gratia compensation of ₹10 lakh was announced for the victim's next of kin shortly after the incident. Subsequently, the Delhi Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) awarded compensation of approximately ₹36.69 lakh to the victim's family, taking into consideration the victim's age, income, future prospects, and dependency of family members. The Kanjhawala investigation underscores TSA's commitment to combining legal precision with forensic science in matters of exceptional public importance.
